Reading and Writing
Second grade is a continuum of learning to read. In Third Grade, students will begin reading to learn. Therefore it is crucial that each child have the foundation of the five components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary as well as self monitoring. Children will be assessed periodically using the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) to evaluate reading levels. Children should be reading at a level 28, independently by the end of Second Grade.
Children write daily for a variety of purposes. Students write in different genres such as, letter writing, narrative writing, non-fiction writing, and poems. Vocabulary, grammar, mechanics, spelling and handwriting are always included.
