  • Weekly spelling lists focusing on specific skills/patterns
  • Emphasis spelling patterns, prefixes, suffixes, roots, and introduce students to origins of words

  • Expository writing including persuasive writing and report writing
  • Poetry
  • Narrative/creative writing
  • Letter writing (on-going throughout year)
  • Figurative language
  • Planning, drafting, editing, and publishing final works
  • Oral speaking
  • Punctuation/capitalization

 

Grammar:

  • Pronouns
  • Nouns

Vocabulary:

  • Analogies
  • Synonyms
  • Antonyms
  • Context clues
  • Usage in writing and speaking

Reading:

  • Continue to locate main idea and details
  • Continue to read a variety of genres including non-fiction and fiction
  • Continue to draw inferences from text
  • Develop library skills for research
  • Continue to compare/contrast works of authors/illustrators
  • Continue to compare/contrast elements of text structure
  • Look at how different literature reflects periods of time
  • Book reports
  • Continue to become proficient at selecting appropriate materials for enjoyment and information

Social Studies:

  • Continue intensive study of United States regions including Midwest and Western regions
  • Thorough study of Colorado history, government, economy
