Physical Education Concepts

 

  1. Students will demonstrate knowledge and competent skills in a variety of movements, physical activities and sports. Examples listed below.
    1. Locomotor movements
    2. Spatial awareness
    3. Chasing and Fleeing (tag games)
    4. Hand-eye, foot-eye coordination
    5. Lead up games for team sports
    6. Team sports units
    7. Tumbling/gymnastics

  2. Students will achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness and understand the benefits of physical activity.
    1. Power point presentation about why we take physical education
    2. What is and how to have a healthy lifestyle
    3. Daily warm-ups and stretching
    4. Daily aerobic or anaerobic fitness
    5. Fitness testing

  3. Students will demonstrate personal and social responsibility, and respect diversity
    1. Sportsmanship
    2. Cooperative learning units
    3. Teamwork
    4. Respect for others, teacher and equipment

  4. Students will demonstrate the knowledge necessary to participate in lifetime physical activities
    1. Walking, jogging, running
    2. “Fitness if Fun” theme, all students are taught the importance of healthy lifestyles and physical activities, not just for the athletes.
    3. Power point presentation, students are taught about lifetime activities. Tennis, Golf, Skiing etc…

As physical education teachers, we have to decide how much of our programs within each grade level we want to devote to teaching students higher-level thinking skill (cognitive), personal interaction skills (affective) and fitness of movement skills (psychomotor). We have to decide whether our job is to make learners fit, or to give them the skills to make themselves fit or a combination of these ideas.

All these decisions are based upon our curriculum but are also related to learning theory and how we think people best learn. Our curriculum changes from year to year and from grade to grade but our philosophy will always stay the same…we want all students to enjoy physical education, to learn the benefits of having a healthy lifestyle and to have fun with learning to be fit!!!!
